Happy Earth Day!
I’d like to provide some perspective, offer some insights, and invite your action to honor and protect one and only home, Earth.
Do you ever ponder how unique our planet is?
There are 8 others in our system, 9 for those who will include Pluto 😉 Earth is the only one with a breathable atmosphere and a surface where we humans can stand without being either crushed by gravity, or floating off into space due to a sneeze or stumble.
As of February 2025, there have been 5,834 exoplanets have been included in the NASA catalogue. 1
212 have been categorized as ‘terrestrial’
23 are categorized as ‘potentially habitable’ 2
Small rocky planets are difficult to detect with our current technology but, these numbers serve as a benchmark for just how rare and special our home, Planet Earth truly is.
Knowing just how unique our planet emphasizes the importance of protecting our home, not just for ourselves but for life itself.
Insightful statistics on the role human activity plays when it comes to Greenhouse Gas Emissions:
The average American emits 16 tons of CO2 per year. This is more than 3x the global average.
The average gas-powered car emits 4.8 tons of CO2 annually.
If food waste were a country, it would be the *third largest emitter* of greenhouse gasses, behind only the US and China. Rotting food produces methane, a greenhouse gas estimated to be 80X more potent than CO2 over a 20 year period.
The fashion industry accounts for 10% of global carbon emissions. With 1/5 of fashion emissions being tied to footwear alone.
A round-trip flight from New York to Los Angeles emits approximately 1 *ton* of Co2 *per passenger!
o I’ve added a helpful visualization of just what 1 ton of Co2 looks like.
What can we do to help?
This Earth Day, take a moment to identify overlooked sources of emissions in your daily life, whether at home or at work. Small changes add up!
Switch to energy-efficient appliances or renewable energy providers.
Walk, bike, or take public transportation when possible.
Cut down on food waste, and reduce meat consumption.
Buy less, choose items with quality and sustainability in mind.
Advocate for change wherever possible.
No action is too small, and collective efforts create real impact. Let’s make every day Earth Day!
I’d love to hear actions you have or are taking to reduce your carbon footprint. Please share and engage.
